The development of Saint-Augustin began in 1647 with the concession of the seigneury of Maur to the brothers Jean Juchereau de Maur and Noël Juchereau Deschatelets1. Noël died shortly after, leaving his brother to take possession of his seigniory on April 9, 1650. Settlement was very slow, however, since in 1663 only three lands were granted.
From this moment the inhabitants become more numerous. A banal mill was built in 1672 where the outlet of Lake Saint-Augustin flows into the Saint-Lawrence River. The Catholic parish was founded in 1691. At that time, the heart of the seigniory was located on the banks of the river since it was there that the first church was built in 1694. Another, in stone, replaced it at Anse -at-Maheu in 1723.
The first land communication route, the Chemin du Roy, crossed the seigneury from east to west from 1716. In 1734 the Sisters Hospitallers of Quebec became seigneuresses of Saint-Augustin and remained so until the abolition of the seigneurial regime. in the middle of the 19th century. Revenues from the seigniory were used to maintain the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec.
In 1816 a third church, the current church, was inaugurated about 2 km further north, on the second concession, a sign of the displacement of the center of gravity of the village. The new road that passes here (the future route 138) supplants Chemin du Roy.
Thereafter, the population increased slowly (1,697 inhabitants in 1831, 1,748 in 1851), but the territory retained its rural and agricultural character. In 1872, part of its territory was detached for the creation of the Parish of Saint-Félix-de-Cap-Rouge. It was not until the 1960s that the municipality began to acquire a suburban character which would develop strongly thereafter. However, a significant part of the territory is still occupied by active farms.
After being merged with Quebec City on January 1, 2002 as part of the Quebec Municipal Reorganizations, the city of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures was reconstituted on January 1, 2006. By a referendum held on June 20, 2004, citizens of Saint-Augustin have decided to leave Quebec City and become a separate municipality again. However, the autonomy of the new city is reduced compared to what existed before 2002.
