Manicouagan sensitive marine clay is mined under the bog in the Manicouagan Peninsula, along the St. Lawrence River, in the Manicouagan-Uapishka Biosphere Reserve. It is part of the composition of a soil which, 214 million years ago, absorbed the shock of a huge meteorite.
The igneous rock of the Canadian Shield, modified by this force, subsequently underwent five to eight glaciations. 12,000 years ago, the Goldthwait Sea which once harbored a rich ecosystem slowly retreated, as did its battering glaciers altering the landscape. The mineralogical and chemical composition of the Manicouagan clay is explained by the erosion and deposition of sediments, transported by the Manicouagan River and the Outardes River to the Peninsula.
