Fourth oldest Canadian city, the Sorel region, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence and the Richelieu, saw the discoverers of New France pass through: Jacques Cartier in 1535 and Samuel de Champlain, who came there for the first time in 1603. Subsequently, Charles Huault de Montmagny, then governor of New France for six years, erected there, on August 13, 1642, a first fort, which took the name of Richelieu and which survived with pain and misery for 5 years before being abandoned for lack of support.

It was only eighteen years later, in 1665, that the real foundation of our region took place and the beginning of a permanent and definitive establishment. From this date began the real development of the region and the permanent occupation of the land.
