According to sources from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Regions, the former Township of Chatham was erected as a municipality in 1855. The vocation of the territory was, at the time, essentially agricultural. In the late 1800s, the company now known as “Orica Canada Inc.” settles in the municipality and contributes to the development, around the plant, of an important urban sector. "Brownsburg" and "Chatham" constituted a single municipality, for 80 years, from 1855 to 1935. taxation of the time which did not allow taxation by sector, lead to the division of the territory of the Canton. The urban part is erected as a municipality under the name of Village of Brownsburg.
