The city owes its name to William Angus, a prosperous industrialist of Scottish origin who decided, after a stay in the region, to build a pulp and paper mill on the banks of the Saint-François River. Transformed and modernized many times since its foundation, the Cascades company acquired it in 1983 and closed the paper mill in September 2014. The company concluded an agreement to sell its boxboard manufacturing and processing assets to Graphic Packaging. The East Angus board mill now employs approximately 115 workers.

Still marrying the banks of the Saint-François River about twenty kilometers from the city of Sherbrooke, in southwestern Quebec, East Angus has nevertheless extended inland to encompass a territory larger and richer than ever. The majority English-speaking population at the beginning of the 20th century is today essentially French-speaking. Long considered a single-industry town, East Angus today presents a very different picture. The city's economy is gradually diversifying, driven by new industrial trends, particularly in terms of biofood processing. The industrial park is also welcoming more and more companies of all kinds.

The presence of exceptional heritage buildings such as the majestic Saint-Louis-de-France church, the second largest in the diocese after the Sherbrooke cathedral, in no way prevents the city from projecting, humanly and visually, an image younger and younger.
