The City of Clermont, Charlevoix's only industrial environment, owes its foundation to a renowned poet, Father Félix-Antoine Savard (1896-1982). A churchman and writer, he is the author of the novel “Menaud Maître-Draveur” (1937), which has become a classic of French-Canadian literature.

As early as 1800, the first settlers settled in the current sector of Clermont, then called “Chute Nairne”. The majority of its population originally practiced agriculture. Saw and flour mills, artisan shops and businesses then appeared. Clermont is then compared to many other rural localities in Quebec. However, this small village attracted attention at the beginning of the 20th century. Entrepreneurs notice that there is hydroelectric potential on site. As early as 1900, a dam supplied electricity to La Malbaie and its surroundings. The door is open to industrial development.
