The history of Varennes begins with the arrival of the Carignan-Salières regiment.
It was René Gaultier, grandfather of Saint Marguerite d'Youville and father of Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, who then founded the city in 1672. Its name is the same as that of the French town of Varennes-sur-Loire, located in the Pays de la Loire.
The five seigniories of the beginning of the colony became the parish and the village of Varennes after the abolition of the seigniorial system. In 1972, the parish and the village merged to finally become the city of Varennes.
