The history of Joliette is first and foremost that of a great businessman, Barthélemy Joliette. It was in 1823 that the entrepreneur came together to build a complex of mills along the L'Assomption River. The village of Industrie was born and quickly became a nerve center in the development of the forest industry in Lanaudière. The establishment of a judicial district in Joliette in 1857 gave the village its role as regional capital. The village of Industrie became the City of Joliette in 1864.
