Located at the intersection of Hwy 2 and George Porter Rd across from the Masstown United Church, there has been a prominent family owned business for almost 60 years. The name of the business has changed over the years but the Gratto’s commitment to their community minded, family run business has always stayed the same.
Owners Kurt and Noel Gratto are locally known as the Gratto boys, and are the third generation of Gratto’s to operate a business at this location. The boys grandfather David first opened his business in 1954, then passed it down to the boy’s father Aubrey in the late 60’s.
In the early 1990’s Kurt and Noel decided it was time to change the focus of the business. With Aubrey ready to retire and the hardware store in Debert set to close, the boys thought this location would be perfect for a Hardware store. The old building was renovated in late 1991 and on May 4th 1992 Masstown Pro Hardware opened its doors for business.
The business has continued to grow to this very day. The back shed was expanded in 1993 and 1994 with another addition in 1996. Construction of a new storage building began in the fall of 2006 and was ready to use by spring 2007. The main building underwent a major renovation in 2008 with a 24 x 50 two story addition and the name was changed to Castle Masstown Hardware Building Centre. In 2009 a state of the art lumber rack was constructed and fencing added around the lumber yard. A few years later the entire lumber yard was paved making it a neat and tidy yard for customers to come get their products.
Masstown Hardware offers quality small town service, with 8 employees on staff to help with any project you may have. When coming to the store you really get a sense of what it was like for your father or grandfather to visit a hardware store back in the day. The staff are friendly and take great pride in serving their customers.
