The Regional Service Commission is governed by the communities and acts as service delivery agents to ensure communities receive the services they pay for. They are not another level of government and decisions are made by the communities through the representatives on the council. The commissions have no power to tax but they will charge for the services provided.
The CSRNO works for the member communities and is financed by them.
Unveiled in December 2011, the Action Plan for a New Local Governance System in New Brunswick included an objective aimed at increased collaboration, communication and planning between communities. It is in order to achieve this objective that twelve new regional service commissions have been created in the province.
These regional service commissions are responsible for:
to ensure or facilitate the provision of mandatory services to the communities;
facilitate voluntary service agreements between interested communities;
to serve as a regional forum for collaboration among communities on regional issues.
