In 1808, members of the family of Simon Landry, the grandson of Alexis Landry, the founder of Caraquet in 1757, were the first inhabitants of Grande-Anse. The first settlement was probably established on the current site of the church. In 1818, land was officially given by the government to three families, that of Rémi Landry, Jean-Baptiste Thériault and Jean-Baptiste Poulin. A little later, two other families arrive, those of Bruno Poirier and Isaac Haché. A year later, the Thériaults moved a little further, to the present site of Anse-Bleue. They then founded this village which still maintains links with Grande-Anse.
In 1808, the first inhabitants of the village were mainly involved in agriculture and woodcutting. Today, the village includes several services: a kindergarten to grade 8 school, a post office, a church, a grocery store as well as the sale of alcohol, hardware store, a bank and credit union, a peat extraction, restaurants, motels, a gas station, a funeral home, the Musée des Papes, as well as several small businesses. The village also has a modern arena — the Center Edmond E. Landry — where hockey and figure skating are practiced. Grande-Anse serves both the surrounding Acadian community and the neighboring English-speaking community "of the caps". People come here to do business as much for purchases as for financial, recreational and religious services.
The village of Grande-Anse was incorporated into a municipality in 1968. This village of nearly 750 inhabitants is located on the western edge of the Acadian Peninsula. It is, in a way, his gateway. Developed along Route 11 — (Rue Acadie in Grande-Anse), the village crowns the highest cliffs in the region and offers a unique vantage point of Chaleur Bay. From these heights, you have a breathtaking view of the Gaspé coast with all its shades of marine blue from the waters to the dark blue of the mountains, the Appalachians.
